Groulien salt-hogs, or just "salt hogs" for short, are the manual laborers of the galaxy. They are a short and stout people, dressed in beige-colored body suits that also function as their work uniforms. They embody the industrial heart of the station, working in gangs of up to four workers in Recyclers and factories. They are one of the armed species, and the sheer size of their population makes them the necessary backbone of station operations and security. This also makes them - unfortunately so - entirely expendable. Luckily, their pleasant demeanor keeps you from feeling guilty for taking such advantage of them.
Salt hog tastes are simple and cheap and they are perfectly content using bare minimum facilities like sleeping berths, lavatrons, and dine-o-mats, but this will not stop them for springing for an enjoyable stop at a Love Nest. They tend to avoid any upper-crust establishments.
They get along with most people, except those who are a bit too snooty given their economic and/or social status. Their society is a commune, with all salt hogs considered equal in the fact that they are all underpaid, overworked, and unappreciated manual laborers. It is their lot in life, and they harbor no resentment for it.
Station functions[]
Salt hogs man - or rather, hog - the station's critical facilities. While most are run automatically by VAL, some require an organic touch in order to work correctly.
Recycler[]
The recycler converts trash and rubbish into usable energy which you can use for both power and currency. The facility has space for four salt hogs to work. The recycler will function with only one salt hog on-site, but four are necessary to quickly and efficiently recycle stuff back into energy.
Salt hogs with criminal backgrounds work just as hard as those with clean records. However, the crims will not send the full amount of energy to your Energy Collector, rather pocketing a little bit for themselves as spending cash.
Factory[]
The Factory is where the salt hogs toil at nano-assembly lines to build Hardplan crates, Technology crates, Furniture, Scuzzers, and Material crates. Salt hogs punch their digital time-cards as they enter, working on the build queue you set out for them.
Criminal 'hogs will work the same as others, but will actually sabotage efficiency, making the assembly line work slower just for their presence.
WARNING: Due to either a bug in the game or mere character design, salt hogs who enter the factory will not leave until the build queue is empty. If you continue adding things to the build queue as construction is going on, they will stay to finish. Now that is dedication. Unfortunately, this means they will ignore all other necessities - sleep, food, sanitation, sanity - and essentially work themselves to death.
